Glossary

The following terms, which are used on this site, will be often encountered during your stay in Indonesia.

Bule — a foreigner; often seen as an insult, but is simply descriptive.
Penjaja keliling — a street vendor who sells food out of a cart; more specific reference can be made by adding the food type in the middle, e.g. penjaja sate keliling (a vendor selling sate) or penjaja bakso keliling (a vendor selling bakso), as well as replacing penjaja with tukang (which means they are specialised in that type), e.g. tukang sate keliling or tukang bakso keliling.
Warung — a very small restaurant or shop serving snacks or traditional food; often family-owned. More specific terminology is warung makan (restaurant), warung kopi (coffee shop).
